Since 2004, the Government of the DRC is working to demobilize and reintegrate ex-combatants that were involved in the many inter-ethnic and regional conflicts in the country. The national DDR program called the PNDDR (Programme national de désarmement, démobilisation et réintegration) is ongoing and set to close in September 2011.
Up to now, the PNDDR (supported by grants from the World Bank-IDA, the MDRP and the African Development Bank) has demobilized 107,836 combatants, released more than 30,000 child soldiers, and provided reintegration assistance to 103,197 former combatants.
Current efforts by the PNDDR focus on economic reintegration of ex-combatants, with a particular focus on ex-combatants associations in agriculture and urban employment. The project signed several contracts in late 2010 for this work. The PNDDR is also continuing to support former child soldiers with formal education, vocational training and employment support.
The TDRP covers one staff based in Kinshasa in charge of supporting the implementation of PNDDR activities. Other activities supported by the TDRP include evaluating the impact of reintegration as well as remaining issues created by the presence of combatants from Rwanda (FDLR) in eastern DRC. |
